1885 Charlestown row house now has two condos
Two brand new condominiums have been built in an 1885 row house near the crest of the ridge that runs through Charlestown. The units are well planned, with floor plans and amenities that will enhance life there.
Sarah Anderson of Hammond Residential Real Estate is marketing both properties.
Unit 1 is a 1,732-square-foot duplex on the garden and parlor levels, listed at $549,000. The other duplex, Unit 2 encompasses the top two floors. It has 1,539 +/- square feet and is listed at $599,000.
Both have outdoor space. Unit 1 includes a deck and the back yard. Unit 2 has two decks, the rights to the roof if a third deck is desired, and views of the back yard and of the enchanting garden next door.
A huge, magnificent weeping birch tree in the yard of this house provides much enjoyment to both units, as do the views of the Bunker Hill Monument.
Both units have open floor plans in the entertainment areas. Six-over-one windows flood the units with light and produce a wide-open feeling.
A gas fireplace has a marble surround and a traditional wooden mantelpiece. The area above the mantel is wired for a flat screen television. White wainscoting compliments the cream colored walls.
The open living room features a gas fireplace with a wooden mantel and a marble surround and lightly stained maple hardwood flooring.
The floors are light stained maple hardwood. They already gleam, but Anderson says that as each unit is sold, a final coating of finish will be added so that they are perfect for the new owners. The floor in front of the fireplace has bands of mahogany, maple and walnut that give the appearance of a hearth.
The lovely ceiling is coffered and surrounded by crown molding. Recessed lighting and surround sound speakers are in place. The lowest shelf of the built-in shelves for books and art objects next to the fireplace has wiring for audio and video equipment.
The kitchen fills the southwest corner of the room. A large center island has paneling that matches the wainscoting on the ends and the outside. The side facing the kitchen holds the sink, the stainless steel dishwasher and a built-in stainless steel oven.
Custom cabinets, including a pantry, surround the range and refrigerator that are against the wall.
The gas range has four regular cook surfaces plus an elongated cooking surface in the center for a griddle.
A stainless steel exhaust fan is above the range. A warming drawer is under the oven.
The chef’s kitchen in each unit features a center island topped with granite. A deck is off the kitchen.
A wide stainless steel refrigerator has French doors and an enclosed bottom shelf where trays of hors d’oeuvres can be at the ready. A freezer is below the refrigerator.
All of the countertops are of beautiful mottled granite. Pendant lights above the island provide abundant light, yet they are hung high enough to be out of the way.
A coat closet and a powder room are across from the kitchen. The powder room boasts bead board, Carrara marble and Kohler fixtures.
A door at the end of the kitchen leads to the master bedroom. Another door that is paneled in glass leads to the deck and the fenced back yard. A white railing surrounds the mahogany deck. Steps lead from the deck to the patio that is paved with cobblestones. A garden area is beyond the patio.
The master bedroom has a huge closet with chrome hardware and built-ins for storage. The large windows overlook the patio and deck.
In the en suite bath the shower walls are subway tiles made of cream-colored Italian marble. A marble recess in the shower wall is available for shampoos, soap, etc. The floor is of marble mosaic tile, and the vanity top is also marble.
Unit 2 has two decks with views of the Bunker Hill Monument. Unit 1 has one deck.
Two other bedrooms and a full bath are in the lower level. The marble bath holds a Jacuzzi soaking tub and two sinks in the long marble-topped vanity. One bathroom door leads to the front bedroom. The second door leads to the hallway outside the back bedroom. A door in the back bedroom opens to the garden outside.
Stairs in the paneled foyer with stone-like tiles lead up to Unit 2.
Unit 2’s living room is larger than that in Unit 1 since it includes the area that is taken up by the foyer on the first floor. Otherwise, the first level is like that of Unit 1, including the kitchen and a deck outside the kitchen. A metal spiral staircase on the deck leads down to the Unit 1 deck and up to the deck on the next level.
Another full bath and two more bedrooms as well as a study are on the upper level.
Exposed brick enhances the east walls on both floors of the unit, and a skylight brightens the upper floor.
A glass-paneled door in the back bedroom opens to another mahogany deck.
The marble bath holds a Jacuzzi soaking tub and two sinks in the long marble-topped vanity.
A study fills the area that is taken up by the foyer on the first floor and the extra living room space below.
All of the baths in both units have marble floors. All other floors feature beautiful maple hardwood. All windows and doors are by Jeld-Wen. Both units have programmable thermostats, intercoms and wiring for surround sound and flat screen television. Each has a closet with connections for a washer and a dryer.
